An emotional tale laid out as a point-and-click game

The Cat Lady is a story-driven game. It is not an arcade or action game. It is similar to an interactive novel. The current fan base consists of people who are raving about the powerful and complex story the game offers. The narrative has tension, style and a massive amount of emotion. If you like interactive books that may be played as games, then you may enjoy this game. Otherwise, you should probably give it a miss.

Point, click, think, and make your next move with caution

The Cat Lady is a point and click game where there is moderate amount of resultant movement. For example, you may click on a table and it asks you to examine or leave it. You examine the table and the character picks up the item on the table. That is basically how the game is played, by interacting with one thing or another. The game is driven by text. You click on areas and text spawns. Usually, the text is the thoughts of your character. The graphics are not very good, they are dark, dingy and poorly drawn. The game is made up of different images that are crudely animated so they have moving parts. It is a little like a child’s picture flipbook. You press an area on the screen and the image changes to your character walking over to it and picking it up. The characters do not move with any form of fluid movement. It is more like flipbook animation because it is jerky and stunted.

It is a hard game to love

Some people really enjoy text-driven games where it is more about reading than it is about action. Such people may enjoy The Cat Lady, but if you want more of an arcade adventure, then you should avoid this game. Playing this game is almost like reading a novel where you get to affect what text comes up next. If you have seen a trailer and you do not mind the style of game play, then it is fair to say you will like the game. It has a very immersive story that current fans of the game are happy to replay over and over again.

PROS

  • If you can stomach the emotion the story becomes deep and powerful

CONS

  • The lack of action will dissuade many gamers from buying it
  • It had an indie budget which means the graphics are pitiful
